I'm sure many of you are thinking "What's the big deal? I've had brunch before. Breakfast and lunch combined. Who cares?" Who cares? New Yorkers care. It took me about a year to even learn about the magic that is brunch in NYC, and I had no idea how important it was. Brunch isn't just eating eggs with your Grandma after church in these parts; Brunch is an EVENT.
Let me break it down for you. In New York, there are about a million and a half places that serve brunch. Why so many, and why is it so important? I'm just going to be frank here: we like to get day-drunk and eat food. Each one of these million and a half places usually has a set amount (say $20) that gets you an entree and an alcoholic beverage (or more). Sometimes - and these are wonderful times - they offer UNLIMITED alcoholic beverages (usually mimosas, bellinis, or bloody marys). So, maybe after a morning shift, or even just waking up, a group of us will get together at our favorite brunch spot, eat delicious food, and get wasted while the sun is still high in the sky. Is being drunk at 2PM socially acceptable? Usually not. But at brunch, hell yeah it is. And it happens every weekend.
